Program Info
Sight words are an important skill for children to learn, and this program will help you teach them to your child. It comes complete
with 220 words (the Dolch Sight Words), and can be expanded with as many extra words as you want. The number of attempts and successes for
each word are stored, and this information is used to provide 7 levels of difficulty to either challenge or encourage the learner. The
results for up to 5 users can be stored, and this data can be browsed and notes added. It can be run as a portable application for maximum
convenience.

Installation
Run "Setup.exe" and follow the instructions. To remove MaxWords, use the "Add/Remove Programs" option in the Control
Panel, or the start menu if you did a low privilege install. MaxWords stores all its data files in the designated application data area,
often "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Sinner\MaxWords". If you would prefer that it saves in the same
directory as MaxWords either run the program from a removable drive, such as a floppy of a USB drive, or delete the "DefSet.txt"
file from the MaxWords directory.
Use
When MaxWords is installed it creates a new word database from the included list. The usernames are automatically set as well, but it's
best to change at least the first one so it matches the primary user. To do this you right-click the main menu, select "Options",
change the first name (it's "Max" by default), change the level if necessary, and then press OK.
Once the initial set-up is done, MaxWords is ready! Press "Correct" when the user is correct, "Incorrect" otherwise,
and "Skip" can be used if for some reason another word is wanted without a score being recorded.
Menu
This menu appears when you right-click on the main window.
Word Details
The details window shows the word, the results for the five users, and any comment that have been made. From here you can browse the
data on other words either directly using the combo-box or in sequence, and you can also add or delete words.
Options
Users | Here you can change the user names. |
Difficulty Level |
When the word selection level is set to Normal the words are selected randomly, and on the easy/easier/easiest settings MaxWords
tries to pick more words that the user has been correct with in the past. The hard/harder/hardest settings are the reverse. Please note
that this function will not work well until most of the words have been attempted at least once, and it will work better the more results
there are. When starting out the Easy levels are often the best to avoid discouragement... |
Import |
You can add a list of words using this function. It needs to be similar in format to the included "dImport.txt". |
Confirm Quit | Sets MaxWords to confirm quit requests. |
Transparency |
This is the degree of transparency that the main window will have when Transparent is enabled. To clarify, 90 is
very transparent, 10 is mostly solid. |
Programmers Notes
This is an enhanced version of a program I wrote to tutor my son. After six months of using it I noticed a few things were needed; a
level in between Hard and Hardest, and a list of right and wrong words for the current session. This version adds these!
System Impact Statement
We go to great lengths to reduce system impact, but we feel that it is still important to explain here what our programs do to your
system. If you feel we are missing something, or you need further clarification, please contact us.
Registry | MaxWords doesn't uses the registry in any way. The installer
that comes with MaxWords uses the registry only for the required un-installation data, and not at all if you use the
"Extract Only" mode or if you install as a low privilege user. |
System Settings | MaxWords does not change any system settings. |
Files | All of its program files are stored in the chosen installation directory, and all of its data files are stored in the
designated application data area, often "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Sinner\MaxWords". If you would
prefer that it saves in the same directory as MaxWords either run the program from a removable drive, such as a floppy of a USB drive, or
delete the "DefSet.txt" file from the MaxWords directory. These directories can be opened via the About box. |
Network | MaxWords and its installer do not access the internet in any way, but the ReadMe does have three graphic files that
are stored on the internet. (They are not used as web-beacons, merely spacers and images for the payment processors.) |
CPU | MaxWords does not have any CPU demanding functions. |
Memory | MaxWords has no major memory requirements. |
